Meet Jesus
Our patient Jesus traveled from Peru just to see us for his keratoconus! You can see him working with Dr. Mai on how we evaluate and design lenses.
Meet Larissa
Larissa has suffered with keratoconus for more than ten years starting from a very young age. She missed out on seeing so many things clearly until she finally decided to come to our Keratoconus Vision Institute. Watch the video to hear her experience with us!
Our Story as Doctors
We are keratoconus doctors who have seen countless numbers of patients over the years. It’s really been a rollercoaster ride. A decade ago, we would fit small, hard contact lenses, and it was the best we could do. Honestly, it was hit or miss, and felt like more misses than hits!
Patients would get mediocre vision at times, but the biggest obstacle was the lenses would feel like rocks in their eyes. They would only tolerate it for minutes at a time and then give up. We would try corneal surgery if nothing else was available, but those results were also mixed.
We started with INTACs but the final vision was still not good and it made wearing custom made contact lenses even worse! There were improvements, but the vision was still not equal to wearing hard contacts. We had some patients get them and then remove them years later because it made wearing contacts difficult or impossible. Since then, we have mostly moved away from that and so have many corneal surgeons.
Corneal transplants? There were graft rejections and often times our patients would need multiple transplants throughout their life. And even then the vision was still not good, despite going through an invasive surgery. It was frustrating!
Finally, we began fitting scleral lenses. It was a godsend to many patients. We would start with a fitting set and sometimes knock it out of the park. But half of the time, after a few hours the lenses would fog up, get cloudy, or leave a tight red ring on their eyes after removing them. Patients would give up.
Fast forward to today. We have new technology and techniques that allow us to dominate keratoconus without all those past headaches. We are successful more than 95% of the time and can show results within seven days! Patients are beyond thankful, and being able to simply see the texture on the floor has made them cry in our office. We’d love to share with you how we do it!
Of course, there are limitations to what we can do online. We can give you all the information to make an informed choice, but if you don’t do anything about it nothing in your life will change. Nothing pains us more. So afterwards, give us a call at one of our locations and talk to us live. We sincerely hope you’ll take massive action and change your life.

Traveling from out of town?
We love seeing patients from all over the country and even internationally. We have locations near these airports: LAX, SEA, and SNA.
The Three Secrets to Dominating Keratoconus
Back in the day, we used to use small, hard contact lenses. The vision was decent but it felt terrible. Here’s the secret to why they were so uncomfortable: blinking. When you blink your eyelids hit the edge of the hard lens. So imagine your eyelids hitting a small speed bump all day long. If the average person blinks 25,000 times a day, you bet you’d feel the lens!
Then came along scleral lenses. These were larger and fit underneath your eyelids, so when you blinked they were extremely comfortable because your eyelids wouldn’t hit the lens edge, but instead glide over the surface. This was amazing, but the lenses were not custom fit. If the lens was too loose the fluid inside would leak out and cause the lens to fog. If the lens was too tight it would suction onto your eye and leave a big red ring when you tried to remove them.
Most doctors were fitting scleral lenses that looked like circles (spherical in shape) and hoped it would sit perfectly on the white part of your eye. The problem was that more than 95% of people do not have spherical eyes, especially those with keratoconus! Their eyes are more oval or football shaped.
So how do we do it differently now? We know that in order for a scleral lens to sit comfortably and be able to wear all day long without fogging, the lens has to be custom made for YOUR eyes. So before we even try a scleral contact lens on, we do a scleral topography.
You may have heard of a corneal topographer—it’s the device that has been around for many years to measure the exact shape of your cornea. Until recently there were no reliable scleral topographers to map out the shape of the white part of your eye.
With the scleral topography, we make a digital map of your eye and design a computer-generated lens straight from the software. Imagine someone did a 3D scan of your body and designed the most perfectly fitted custom-tailored suit within 10 microns of accuracy, all across your body. That’s basically our approach to designing your lenses! No more “small, medium, or large” off-the-rack approach, but a true custom fit that will be comfortable all day long.
These lenses effectively resurface the front part of your eye, and you’ll have the vision you didn’t even imagine was possible.
We’ve heard this from a handful of patients with keratoconus (but luckily a relatively small number): “I can’t wear contacts. I tried before. I gave up.” The first question we ask them is how long ago was that? We get it. The lenses in the past were uncomfortable and hard to insert. The vision through them still wasn’t great.
Maybe the clinic you went to rushed you through the process and you weren’t given a solid chance. But less than 1% of patients we’ve seen after our training process failed with wearing our lenses. As with many things, it’s not a physical limitation but a mental one that keeps you from using contacts.
But we’ll hold your hand throughout the process; even the most apprehensive patients have succeeded. We have full confidence that you will succeed and we’ll patiently guide you to overcome your barriers. The reason is simple. It’ll be worth it at the end. You’ll literally have the best vision you’ve had in years, or even decades. Don’t be quick to give up before even trying. We certainly won’t give up on you!
We’ve heard it hundreds of times. “I was told by a hotshot keratoconus doctor that I need surgery.” But when we check that same patient, there is minimal scarring and they are capable of great vision. Before you undergo the knife, you owe it to yourself to get a second opinion—see if less invasive treatments like our custom Scleral 2.0 Lens would work. We find that the majority of the time we can help, and you won’t require a surgery like a corneal transplant as soon as you thought!
We are huge fans of crosslinking and may recommend it for you. But crosslinking will not improve your vision and, depending on your age, may not even be worthwhile. Crosslinking’s main objective is not to improve your vision but to stop the progression of keratoconus. Most corneal surgeons aren’t opting for INTACs anymore as well, because they know the visual outcomes with scleral lenses are so much better. Wearing our custom scleral lenses are less risky, offer immediate vision improvement, and can give you better vision than most surgical solutions.
Your Journey with Our Scleral 2.0 Lens system
Step 1: Doctor or keratoconus manager phone consultation so that you can learn if we are the right place for you.
Call one of our three locations and mention that you have keratoconus. They’ll set up a complimentary phone consult with one of our keratoconus counselors or doctors if you have more complicated questions. Discuss your case so that you can learn exactly how to improve your vision. We want to get to know you before you come in.
Step 2: Come into our clinic for a corneal health evaluation and corneal topography so that we can determine what treatment is best for your unique situation.
Every patient is different and we need to find out the best approach for you. Maybe it’s simply the right pair of glasses, maybe a combination treatment such as getting crosslinking in addition to a rigid gas permeable lens. Finding the unique custom treatment for you begins once we find out exactly how you are using your eyes.
The corneal topographer is a device we’ll use to map out the exact shape of your eye. Topographers are hyper precise to digitally capture how steep your keratoconus is and captures thousands of data points. We use this to examine the digital eye “fingerprint” that is your unique to you. This ultimately guides our treatment decision.
After we discover more about you, what you’ve done in the past, and current condition we’ll be able to move forward to the next step. Whereas other offices will stop at corneal topography, your eye is not just the shape of your cornea. You also have the white part of your eyes called the sclera. If we need to design scleral lenses, it only makes sense that we digitally map and capture the exact shape of the white part of your eye also.
Step 3: Measure scleral topography in our office so that we can design the perfect lens for you.
We are proud to say our clinics are one of the few scleral lens offices in the world that actually utilize a scleral topographer to map the precise shape of your eyes. We use the scleral topographer to digitally capture the shape your entire eye so when we custom mold your lenses so they fit like a glove. We are among the first in the world with this technology!
But how can we be sure that designing a custom Keratoconus Scleral 2.0 Lens for you would even work? Well, that leads us to step 4 which is trying on a sample lens in office just to measure your potential.
Step 4: Try a corneal or scleral lens in our office so that you can experience what your ultimate vision can be.
While this sample lens won’t have your exact prescription or fit, we can at least test your possible success before you make any time or large financial commitments to pursue treatment. This eliminates all your risk, and we’re happy to do this for you. Most offices would charge thousands for you to even try—and if it doesn’t work for you, then you’re out a lot of time and money. We like to know ahead of time if this works so that both doctor and patients are happy with the results.
So you are going to receive quite a bit of value from us in these four simple steps.
You’ll get tremendous value coming in to our clinic to discover what great vision awaits you. We’ll do all this work for you and hold your hand down the path. If you are able to experience better vision than you’ve had for years, if not decades, it would easily be worth $950.
What it be worth it to you to be able to see 20/20 again? Of if you could pass the DMV’s vision test and get your driver’s license? Would that be worth $950? If you could see people’s faces clearer, and read the signs above the grocery aisles, would that be worth it?
So we know that coming in and being able to see what visual potential lies ahead of you is so important and that $950 is a great value. But we wanted to lower the barrier for our patients even further.
If you call or schedule a Keratoconus evaluation now, you will get all that for just $25.
We’ve made it easy. Most offices will charge over $950 to even start the fitting process, try a scleral lens on, and get custom measurements. But for just $25 you can schedule a consult to meet with us and we can take digital maps of your eye shape and have you even try a lens on that same day to see what you might be capable of. You’ll know immediately in our office that same day if this not only works for other patients, but most importantly if it works for you! Afterwards you can decide if you want to pursue the Scleral 2.0 Lens further and order custom lenses to take home but will incur no further expense if you decide not to order anything.
We really want to help you.
We are passionate about treating patients with keratoconus. It is our greatest joy to see the smiles we get on a routine basis in our offices. By far the number one regret we hear from patients everyday is, “We wish we could have come sooner.” Keratoconus has caused them to miss out on so much in their lives—they wish they could turn back time and come in to see us sooner.
The one thing that is impossible to get back is time. So we encourage you to get after it, give us a call, and let us fight keratoconus together. Because life takes vision.
