Scleral Lens Instructions

Once you get your scleral lens, make sure to follow these instructions on how to use and care for them. We've included some tips to help you out too!

Application

  1. Place mirror on flat surface facing upwards.
  2. Wash hand thoroughly with non-moisturizing soap and dry them completely with a lint-free cloth.
  3. Rinse scleral lens with saline solution.  Rub away any remaining cleaning solution from sides of lens.
  4. Place lens on application device.
  5. Fill lens bowl with saline solution, making sure to overfill the bowl.
  6. Secure eyelids open, allowing for room to insert the lens.  Dry fingers and lids are crucial for good grip.
  7. Tuck chin to chest.  Lean forward from hip to position face directly downwards.
  8. Apply lens to eye by raising application device vertically which looking into center of lens.  Continue until some fluid overflows the bowl and you feel some pressure of the lens on the eye.
  9. Release the eye lids and squeeze the application device while lowering it from the eye to release it from the lens.
  10. Check for air bubbles.  Remove and reapply lens if present.
  11. Rinse application device and store dry.  Mild soap and warm water is adequate for cleaning.

Tips

  • Gently rub conditioning solution on the lens to improve lens comfort and vision.
  • Make sure your eyelids and fingers are dry to promote a firm grip.
  • When holding your eyelids open, if you can see white all around the colored part of the eye (iris), you will likely have enough room to apply the lens.
  • Holding the eyelids at the base of the lashes instead of at the skin of the lid helps to fully open the eye.
  • Keep both eyes open to maintain focus and maximize the opening of the eye.

Removal

  1. Wash hand thoroughly with non-moisturizing soap and dry them completely with a lint-free cloth.
  2. Facing a mirror on the wall, secure lids similarly to when applying the lens.
  3. Place the removal device at 6 o’clock position with enough pressure to allow the device to suction onto the lens.
  4. Use the removal device to break suction of the lens from the eye by rocking it in an outward motion from the eye.
  5. Once suction breaks, gently pull the lens from the eye with the device without dragging it on the front of the eye.
  6. Remove the lens from the device by gently sliding it off.
  7. Rinse removal device and store dry.  Mild soap and warm water is adequate for cleaning.

Supplies

  • Removal Device
  • Contact Lens Case
  • Cleaning Solution
  • Wall Mirror

Tips

  • Make sure your eyelids and fingers are dry to promote a firm grip.
  • Do not apply removal device to the center of the lens.  This causes more pressure on the eye during removal and could damage the scleral lens.
  • Adding a few drops of saline into the eye before attempting removal helps make removal easier.
  • If the lens isn’t coming off easily, try these options:
  • Rotate the lens clockwise and counter-clockwise with the removal device
  • Nudge the lens with your finger through the lower lid
